Our March 19th meeting will be held at the Ponderosa Steakhouse,
3100 Rt. 60 East in Huntington.
The Engineers Club of Huntington meeting will feature a video produced by A.S.C.E. on "Tunnel Construction - Problems and Solutions"
Abstract:
After learning from the aquaducts of the Romans and the deaths and expense of early tunnel construction, through the tunnels built during the 19th - 21st centuries, this film shows problems of tunneling for railroads and highway through mountains of rock and under rivers, and how engineers solved the problems encountered. From ventilation systems exhausting gasses from vehicles and then inducing clean air to today's demands of repairs while traffic is maintained are all discussed. Tunnel fires are a fairly recent phenomenon and are another concern - the 1999 Mont Blanc tunnel fire had temperatures reaching 1,800 degrees F.
Our video utilizes historical lessons, but has many recent construction projects. Special situations originating under the English Channel and tunneling under Boston are discussed.
The video is about 65 minutes in length; several ECH Board members viewed the video to verify its suitability for use. The ECH Board has determined it to be informative, sufficiently technical, and will be offering certificates for 1 PDH.
The social hour begins at 6PM, with dinner at 7PM, and program beginning near the end of dinner. For reservation information, please see a copy of the latest newsletter by clicking this link.
